Alex Toth and the Lazybirds, 'Vermont Sky Session'
"The formula for a successful album of the young jazz combo is a simple one: key lineup of players + diverse reinterpretation of standard song repertoire + precise and thoughtful playing = interesting neo-jazz without showcasing original material. The lineup of the Lazybirds is a sturdy pyramid starting with Alex Toth and Annakalmia Traver sharing the peak with trumpet, and alto sax/flute/vocals, respectively. Traver’s vocals are highlighted on “Goodbye Porkpie Hat,” and Toth and Traver’s melodic lines dance across the charts and take lead of the tune. Taking the body of the pyramid is Peter Krag on piano. His comping chops as well as rhythmic clarity provide the core of the group’s sound. John Rogone on upright holds down the low end of the ensemble’s center. His attentive playing allows for improvisation as well as composed sections. Dan Ryan takes the foundation on drums with his rock solid tempo and creative solos. Highlights also include “I Hear a Rhapsody” recorded live at Radio Bean, in Burlington, Vermont. These kids have certainly acquired their jazz roots, digested the form, and created something fresh. - E. Mintz"
